First topic message reminder :

Attention: Tournament signups have closed!!
Hey guys! I'm keeping this comment up-to-date in the edit section below but I'm leaving the rest here for the benefit of the readers.
As you are probably aware, theether recently started a small tournament for interested players where all the players had to choose Grimm. I personally have found it fun so far and only one game is finished.
EDIT: Okay, so a lot has changed since this was originally posted so I'm going to intervene here. I'll leave the rest of the original post in tact for posterity in this spoiler and below I'll continue with the new information.
If you don't already know, the plan was to arrange a fun, multiplayer, FoW tournament and this topic is to discuss player interest and potential rules. For those of you who were following along from the beginning, BountyFrog no longer has any involvement due to his extended inactivity on both this forum and AWBW. I will no longer be participating in the tournament myself, acting solely as the organizer. The discussion is spoilered below for length and because I will not keep it up to date. You can read if you so desire, but all of the relevant and updated information will be kept under the "Current Tournament Rules and Settings" heading, below.
Anyway, feel free to discuss or debate any of this up until the point that the tournament starts. Remember, I want it to be a tournament that people want to play in, so tell me what you like!

- Spoiler for Posterity:
- Since it was so much fun, BountyFrog and I (mostly BountyFrog with my help) have decided to organize a tournament of 4p games. The plan I think is to have the games be FoW, but if we have a big push for no fog we can always do without it. What we aren't really sure about yet is how exactly to organize it and what the rules should be. For example, here are some potential options:
FFA games: With no/limited diplomacy/truces with other players to reduce the odds of people getting ganged up on? Advancement through the tournament might be based on a point system with the first player out in any game is eliminated and the next group are ranked based on position? Potential to instead just keep the top 2 finishers of each game and maybe favor someone with a 1st place vs a 2nd place in the cases of draws etc? Keeping only the winner of each match would mean we need a lot of people so I don't think that's realistic.
Team games: With teams, the advancement options are pretty well limited to the winning team and diplomacy isn't an issue. The real question is, if we go with the team game approach, do we keep fixed teams or do partners change based on some sort of ranking system (who did well and who didn't etc) so that they are balanced somewhat after every round. Also, if we have it open to anyone on the street (so to speak) what happens if a team member gets booted? Do we find a new player and rematch?
Regardless, I think resigning is unfair unless it is either down to 2P in an FFA setting, or both members of a team agree to resign.
If you don't already know, the plan was to arrange a fun, multiplayer, FoW tournament and this topic is to discuss player interest and potential rules. - Spoiler for Length:
- I'd personally prefer this to be a teams tournament so unless anyone has major objections, consider this to be for 2-player Teams! I'd also prefer to have teams randomly selected from all participants for the sake of being fair, but that still leaves 2 options:
- You get the same (randomly assigned) teammate every game
- New, random teammates are assigned with each new game
Due to general lack of players, a round robin is probably best to start (maybe 3-5 games?) so I was thinking of implementing Option 2 for the round robin and getting some stats built up, and then effectively generating more permanent teams for elimination based on seed. Players with the best record would be paired with players with worse records, but, as incentive for landing a higher seed, those with the best records after the round robin get to decide the maps for the tournament (like homefield advantage). At each elimination match, the highest seed player in that match picks the map unless there is a tie. At that point, the highest combined team seed wins and that team has to agree on the map. Normally the higher ranked player does not need to consult their teammate, but here it would be mandatory to reach a team decision; if a timely decision is not made, an automatic deferral to the opposing team would be implemented. For maps, I would probably provide some general constraints on size and funding but more or less leave the player the freedom to pick at will (pending my approval, of course).
On booting and resigning: All players must take their turns in a timely manner and avoid being booted and all resignations must be a team decision. A warning will be issued to any player in violation of this rule and any player that gets booted or inappropriately resigns more than once can be ejected from the tournament. I would posit that any match in which a player is booted or a player resigns prematurely/without their partner's consent should result in a loss for that player and a draw for the remaining 3, unless there was a clear victor at the point of boot/resignation. During elimination rounds things will be more complicated and I will probably take things on a case-by-case basis should problems arise at that point. - You get the same (randomly assigned) teammate every game
Anyway, feel free to discuss or debate any of this up until the point that the tournament starts. Remember, I want it to be a tournament that people want to play in, so tell me what you like!

Tournament Rules and Layout:
- 3-5 game round robin
- Player seeding based on round robin
- Elimination rounds based on the number of players
- 8-11 Players- Top 8 seeds continue to elimination
- 12-15 Players- Top 12 seeds continue to elimination; teams with top two seeds have a first round bye
- 16+ Players- Top 16 seeds continue to elimination
- Highest seed will always be paired with seed just below half, 2nd seed with 2nd below half, etc. (eg: for 8 players, elimination round teams are seeds 1&5, 2&6, 3&7, 4&8 )
Tournament winners will be determined as follows:
- 1st- Highest seed on winning team
- 2nd- Lowest seed on winning team

Oh I see what you mean. I re-sized it so that it fit the approximate width of the text in the post, but I guess if your browser window is too small it gets cut off. Your post has it full size which shows up as being cut off for me (that's why I shrunk it down originally)
I'll update my post so it's a little smaller and also can be used as a link to the full size image.

Hmm, odd. Well, rather than mess with the image any further, here's the list of the games you'll be playing:
Round1/Map1: You + theether vs blanci1 + Everdan
Round2/Map2: You + Nyvelion vs Kamuscha + theether
Round3/Map3: You + Everdan vs Nyvelion + TacticsCommand
Round3/Map3: (2nd game) You + Kamuscha vs the-deadly-shadow + MaddMaxx
All games on a given round will be running simultaneously so in round 3, on map 3, you'll be playing both of those games at the same time. I'll be posting the list of upcoming games by round before I create them and I'll also be sending PMs with the join information so as long as your active (doesn't appear to be a problem), you should be in the loop!

Re: 2v2 Teams Tournament
Okay, here comes the next major update! I present to you:
Map for Round 1: Antidote by Headphone
CO Bans: Colin, Grit, Hachi, Kanbei, Sensei, Sturm, Drake, Olaf
Unit Bans: Black Bombs
Map for Round 2: Hamal by excomotive
CO Bans: Colin, Grit, Hachi, Kanbei, Sensei, Sturm, Drake, Olaf, Hawke
Unit Bans: Black Bombs
Map for Round 3: Chrominous by Divva
CO Bans: Colin, Grit, Hachi, Kanbei, Sensei, Sturm, Drake, Olaf, Hawke
Unit Bans: Black Bomb
Lab Units: Bomber, Stealth
Okay, so let me explain a little bit about why I picked and banned what I did. First, some of you may be disappointed in the map selection- they might not be big or unique enough for you; I actually have a couple reasons for that but, obviously, I also think that these maps are all really good and should be fun. Anyway, the reason I selected these maps is because, apart from looking at balance, I wanted to make sure that these games didn't take too long and many of the good Team Play maps that I've had a lot of fun on are huge. 4P Teams - Now with less meat is a great example of a map that I've enjoyed a lot, but depending on how the battle goes, can end up dragging on for a long time. There will be a lot of Round Robin games and some people will be playing in more than one on a given map, so I didn't want to overwhelm anyone or wait a year for the games to finish. Also, since the elimination round maps can be decided by the top seeded player, there will probably be more unique, fun, or large team maps in those games, even though there are fewer matches.
Now, CO bans. Brokens should be obvious, and if Sturm isn't good enough with his usual movement bonus, the rain really breaks him. You might not enjoy seeing Drake, Olaf, and Hawke banned, but the fact of the matter is that mass-damage CO's are extremely powerful in multiplayer games because they impact so many more enemy units. For example, Hawke's SCOP is already extremely powerful in 2P games, but put him in this tournament and he has twice the targets even if he doesn't directly engage 1 of the enemy players. I left Hawke in for the first round on Antidote because the map is small and funding is much lower, making his SCOP harder to achieve, but I banned Drake and Olaf because, frankly, you'll be getting enough bad weather as it is.
That's all I have for now, but later tonight I'll be making an official post on Round 1 games which I'll probably make tomorrow sometime.

Re: 2v2 Teams Tournament
Round 1 games have been created! The following games can be found in Waiting Private:
Teams Tournament Round 1: Game 1
Nyvelion + Kamuscha vs MorganLeah + TacticsCommand
Teams Tournament Round 1: Game 2
blanci1 + Everdan vs theether + insignia21
Teams Tournament Round 1: Game 3
MaddMaxx + Sneggid vs the-deadly-shadow + Nyvelion
All games are played on Antidote, as discussed in my last post, with CO and unit bans I mentioned. All games are FoW games with random weather and boot/aet limits of 4 to encourage timely play, especially considering the small map size.
PMs with specific information are being sent on AWBW from my Xmö5 account so I can make sure that I have enough inbox space to take any responses, notifications, etc. Please let me know if you have any questions, and if not, join your games and have fun!!

Alright, I'm officially going to start games 1 and 3. Still waiting on game 2, but they've only had one day since the weekend. Since, in my experience, weekends can be a little slow around AWBW, I don't mind waiting a little longer before I start sending any messages
Anyway, if any of the remaining players of game 2 see this post, please join at your earliest convenience so I can start your game as well.
Thanks guys, and good luck to everybody!!

Not that I have a better alternative, but.. seems like, if I were in the last game before the final brackets were set, I'd be better off losing on purpose to lower myself to 5th place if possible, since the difference between 4th and 5th is being paired with 8th and 1st.

I see your point and it's somewhat concerning, but I don't feel it will be an issue in a practical sense. The reason I say that is because there are only 4 games but 11 players- odds are you will have the same record as at least one other player and the deciding factor as to who gets the better placement among those with the same record will be a thorough analysis of all games played. If someone battling for 4th vs 5th place and they're able to not only recognize it, but orchestrate their final match in a way that plants them exactly where they want to be, they are either the luckiest person I know, or good enough and well-studied enough that I doubt they'd be fighting for 4th/5th. (This is especially true if they can't view the other Round 3 games due to the FoW)
That said, it's probably true that 5th place gains a bit of an advantage over 4th place (theoretically), but on the other hand, 4th place can win the tournament while 5th place can only end in 2nd at best. Some consolation at least to whoever gets 4th (I hope).

I was having a super busy week so I set vacation for a few days, but then after like 3 days it booted me. I don't know what happened there, sorry everyone A shame because it was quite an exciting game

Re: 2v2 Teams Tournament
Unfortunately for Morgan I'll have to count it as a loss, but it really is a shame the vacation feature didn't work like it's supposed to. Everyone else (Nyvelion included) will have this count as a draw* because I don't believe there was a clear enough victor at the time of the boot. Nyvelion did a good job regaining territory and recovered from the early hit and I see no reason why the tides couldn't have turned before the match ended.
Looks like everyone had fun at least, and I have to admit that I'm quite surprised to see not one, but two megatanks (granted, one was a counter) in this game! Once all the games are finished I'll start round 2 games and upload the current stats.
*Keep in mind that final records will be both quantified and qualified, so wins and losses will also be judged by the quality of play, reason for loss, etc.

Alright, we'll follow the same procedure. the-deadly-shadow will take a loss unfortunately and when you guys have all set draw I'll review the game and make my judgments. Officially it will probably result in a draw for the other 3 players but not necessarily. Let me know when the game's officially done!

Well, I'm hoping not. We still have one viable round 1 game underway. The other 2 have resulted in boots, but if the next 2 sets of round robin games go a little more smoothly I think it's still fine. Too many more boots though and it'll be hard to give any meaningful stats before the elimination games.

yeah a long complicated game with quite a bit of to and fro- ing.
At one point i thought we had lost any winning chances
PRESS to Everdan from Blanci.... day 10
I was using a mobile phone to make my moves because i am travelling ... and
something awful happened...
My tank somehow jumped to the wrong square
A real pity as i could have eliminated theethers 3rdinfantry and stopped his capture of
important central city and i could block city with t copter
Oh well i tried to fix things best i can . Sorry about that.
most times i was thinking it would be drawn , even when things were bad for us, due to map having exposed open frontline but somehow due to fog and weather finally stuff happened. I think our central control and collaboration helped . i notice on the replay that our opponents try to sneak round on wings on several occasions. I guess it could give nasty surprise but really options get limited like that. Or perhaps the early stealth was not good as an infantry on mountain spied it and we quickly countered profitably with fighter. Also sami never used any power ...seemed to be waiting for scop hq grab but sasha ruined that. sami could have had nice COP perhaps 5 or 6 times instead of waiting for an all or nothing.
interesting and enjoyable game.
Everdan was great partner but i feel we should change partners for next round.
I think it can be enjoyable to hear different viewpoints in game press.
Bring on the next round!

Re: 2v2 Teams Tournament
I thought we had a big advantage in the start with a funding lead, but a couple of badly misjudged attacks (by me mainly) led to us getting overwhelmed. The weather didn't help us at some points, and I underestimated the dangers of FOW as I almost never play it. It was quite fun though, next time I'll definitely buy some recons. Good game to everyone, I'm very glad we at least finished a game instead of ending via boot

Re: 2v2 Teams Tournament
Thanks for the game guys, was really interesting and fun! Blanci really carried the game with sound advice and judgment, and replay analysis shows that he managed to take a comfortable lead against ether with a couple of well-executed attacks.
That said, we were at a sizable funding disadvantage for the better part of the game, and no doubt my own battle would have been far more difficult had Invi not been a tad too reckless in his attacks. Still, their strategy of letting sasha abuse the airport and sami abuse the extra factory was really impressive, especially with their funding advantage, so it's quite a pity that they didn't get the chance to make it really shine.
GG, see y'all in the next rounds

Still, their strategy of letting sasha abuse the airport and sami abuse the extra factory was really impressive, especially with their funding advantage, so it's quite a pity that they didn't get the chance to make it really shine.

Re: 2v2 Teams Tournament
Wow, great match guys! Looks like there were some great maneuvers on both sides, though that stealth ended up having unfortunate timing, especially with the added insult of Kindle's COP.
Anyway, I'll go ahead and notify all players of upcoming Round 2 games and in the mean time I'll put together the standings based on the Round 1 results. Players can expect games to be formed within the next few days, so stay tuned!

Re: 2v2 Teams Tournament
Alright everybody, Round 2 games have been officially created! Everyone will have at least 1 game in this round, and 5 players will have 2 games. The players with 2 games this round are:
MorganLeah
Sneggid
the-deadly-shadow
Everdan
theether
As a reminder, the map that is being used for this round is Hamal by excomotive. I will be sending PMs on AWBW to all participants, notifying them of their games/passwords and what country they should be playing as. For reference, the below image is a summary of the Round 2 pairings.
Please, please, please try your best to keep your AWBW PM inbox from being full as it is the primary (and sometimes only) way that I can contact you regarding games and updates, etc. I will be using my Xmö5 account to help reduce the chances that my own inbox is full, but if for whatever reason you can't get a message through to that account, you can also send PMs to my other accounts (Xmo5 and Ninja_Weasel) or use this forum to either PM me or post on this thread. Also, please try your best to remain active to limit the number of boots. If you will be away for a while, please set vacation, but keep in mind that sometimes it doesn't work as planned.
Anyway, good luck to everyone in the second round! Let me know if you have any questions!

Re: 2v2 Teams Tournament
Okay ...for a bit of action while many players are vacationing I've created a parallel team game on the same round 2 map (hamal) with same conditions in fog and weather as tournament but so as not to help us learn to much about the map I've opened it up to brokens and no unit bans !
Anyone reading this is wecome to join.... Though you ll obviously be an active player at least for the next 2weeks say. After that well we all need holidays
Game name .........2v2round2brokens....... In private
Password .... abc
Have fun.

Boot
It seems my partner Nyvelion has been booted from our game for not playing for a few days. I've completed my turn as per usual, but presumably the match will have to be aborted? It's very disappointing, I wanted to try Sonja FOW
