The AWBW Map Committee is proud to announce the AWBW Speed Dating tournament! This will be a tournament that will begin approximately one week from this posting (around June 8th) and will continue through the month. The goal is to have a unique, fast paced tournament on some relatively unused but solid maps. The unique gimmick of this tournament will be a Boot/AET of 2/2. This means that if you do not take a turn for two days, you will be booted. This tournament will test your limits as a player, and see how adept you are at making split second decisions without having as much time as the average AWBW game. To sign up, just post here with your AWBW username.
Important to note: These games will use Advance Wars By Web's built-in tournament function. Due to the automation of the tournament, after you sign up, we should be able to place your in your games automatically, which should speed things along in line with the general feel of this "speed tournament." Once players are placed in their game, they will have 2 days to pick their CO/country before the game is started. After 2 days, your game will start automatically. If you have not picked a CO before then, the default CO will be Adder.
Opponents for round 1 will be assigned by Global League based seeding. From there, the system will place you in your games directly with your opponent based on the results of your previous game. As such, you will only have to choose your CO and your country, as you did in round 1. You will advance in this fashion until you are eliminated or you win the tournament. We will be keeping track of the tournament standings at all times through Advance Wars By Web itself and will post those to the forum here accordingly to ensure all information on wins and losses are accurate and can easily be seen by all players and spectators.
---
All games will be standard in keeping with Global League style games. That means:
To keep things moving, we will not be using the earlier proposed systems for having players pick and choose the maps. Instead, all maps and CO Tiers will be selected by the map committee, again, so that there is no delay from players choosing their maps and co tiers.
---
The tournament's format will be Single Elimination. We are looking for at least 16 players, but if there are more total players that apply, we will adjust and accommodate them. The preliminary maps for each round are as follows:
Round 1
Blast Shield
http://awbw.amarriner.com/prevmaps.php?maps_id=62752
Round 2
2020
http://awbw.amarriner.com/prevmaps.php?maps_id=65693
Round 3

Round 4
Stranger Tides

---
The AWBW Map Committee is very excited to run this event for the month of June, and we look forward to your participation! Some questions you may have are addressed below.

Question:
Answer: This new feature unique to this tournament will also be manually enforced, so in the case that the script does not work, we will be able to manually boot players if they do not keep up with the Boot/AET of 2/2 and the site does not boot them.
Question: What if I need to go on Vacation during the tournament?
Answer: Any player that AET's due to vacation will be eliminated from this tournament so that other players are allowed to continue participating.
Question: Will these games count towards our W-L-D or Rating for the Global League?
Answer: No, they will not, although this may change in future tournaments.

Here's how the tournament works:
1) When a new round starts (Round 1 should start on June 8th), all not-eliminated players are added to their games automatically. Your game will show up under "Games Waiting to Start" on the "Your Games" page.
2) Every player will have 2 days to change their CO and country choice (Adder is the default CO).
3) After 2 days, I will auto-start all games. When it is your turn, the game will show up in the "Your Turn Games" page like it normally does for every other AWBW game.
For those of you who have played in the League, it is very similar to that. The only thing you have to do as a participant is pick your CO and take your turns. Hope that clears it up!

Re: AWBW Speed Dating Tournament
Quick note, there are 3 single elimination brackets. The top 6 players were seeded based on ratings and all other players were placed randomly. The winner of each bracket will participate in a round robin championship. I will add everyone to their games tomorrow, and the games will start on Wednesday. Everyone will have two days to pick their CO. Good luck!

Hi DarkFog, I'm sorry but you are a little too late. Don't worry, there should be more tournaments in the future.

Me (Yesterday): Oh neat, looks like a lot of new players are joining, I might actually win a game!
[Username: soviet power supreme]
[Win - Loss - Draw: 28 - 0 - 11 ]
Me (Today): ...maybe next tournament... today, Soviet Power Supreme will likely crush Irish Power Inferior.

Nah, that's just a number... well, 3 numbers really. No reason you can't win that unless you give in to defeat! "Never give up, never lose!"

Either that or my opponent will be booted if he keeps taking so long to login... on Day 3 when some games have finished already... I guess you could say my opponent is "Stalin".

Well, if it makes you feel better, the only reason some of these other games finished (2, 1 of them being mine) is because the players were super active. A lot of the games look more like yours.

Re: AWBW Speed Dating Tournament
It's okay, not so much a complaint as necessary context for the Stalin/stalling punchline.
Kinda disappointed though... he got booted just like his people got booted out of Eastern Europe.
I saw him login, his last action was viewing his "Your Turns" page. I thought he'd have an easy time taking his turns; he was only in one game, while I was starting this game after already starting multiple fronts in other games that divided my attention... I thought, based on history, he'd be good at punishing that kind of tactical mistake.
Maybe he just had limited internet access? Maybe they have internet lines now, and he only had enough time, after first placing an order for more Vodka, to see his games page before the next person in line got called.
Or maybe he just hired a spy to scout me out, found me, saw I had red hair, got confused about if I was a Comrade or not, and refused to attack.
...okay I think I'm done now, got it all out of me.

Haha, well it looks like that makes it you and me for round 2. Probably won't get as much communist humor out of it, but at least the game should go somewhere!

Wow this tournament really is progressing fast. The small map with a very exposed HQ certainly played a part, the next map should be a very interesting change of style. Great fun so far!

Re: AWBW Speed Dating Tournament
2 boots out of 24 players is a pretty good rate, too. Thanks to everyone for being active and not ruining the spirit of the tournament.
I started the first game in the 2nd round. Basically I'll start games as players pick a CO, so if you want to use Adder in the second round just shoot me a PM and I'll start the game when you're ready. The 2-day limit on picking your CO won't start until the last Round 1 game finishes, so feel free to take your time.
Good luck to all!

Re: AWBW Speed Dating Tournament
hope this speed thing works out well...
good to see a bunch of less active players getting active again for this. Exam time means i cant join this time.
One issue may be worth thinking about is world time zone differences. if both players say from same zone then they could be awake and play a bunch of turns... and generally go better. Still whatever we need to try speedier formats . i m gonna look at some games ,,, good luck all.

This is what I'm looking at for Round 3 settings: http://awbw.amarriner.com/create.php?prefs_id=1373
I'm going to make the games now, let me know if you guys want any changes and I can fix it.

Re: AWBW Speed Dating Tournament
I hope to choose the COs from lower tiers. Or it will be a game among vb, sasha and javier. If choosing vb or sasha, the game may become similar to the nop games.WalkerBoh wrote:This is what I'm looking at for Round 3 settings: http://awbw.amarriner.com/create.php?prefs_id=1373

Lower tier COs usually have disadvantages, which let the player to find the better strategy. I think it's more interesting...

Re: AWBW Speed Dating Tournament
I prefer having more CO choice like in the settings suggested, it's quite annoying when you only get to choose from 5 or 6 of the weakest COs. Yes some are stronger than others, but other than VB, Sasha and Javier, Hawke and Eagle are both very viable options too, and there are a few others with decent chances also. I find that more exciting at least than Adder vs Jake.

Well then, how about setting mid tier? Decent co choice without restricting it too much.

Re: AWBW Speed Dating Tournament
Is it really a problem to have a game with Sasha/VB/Javier? I agree that using these CO's is closer to a game with No COP than a game using someone like Eagle or Hawke, but is that actually a bad thing? Of course all users will have their own preferences, but I think a variety of settings throughout the tournament is a good thing. We had high tier in Round 1, low tier in Round 2, now top tier in round 3. I would expect a mid or high tier setting in the championship round.
I was really asking if there were any balance issues.

Thanks WalkerBoh and Xmo5! A bit disappointing final two rounds with one early game sneak win and one boot, but it was great fun overall! Thanks for organising this
