Hello Everyone
Sorry if this is in the wrong place. I noticed that you guys had made an alt awbw forum (which actually seems to be active), so I thought I'd sign up and say hello, and maybe pick up a game. What's been happening?

Re: Hello Everyone
Hi! It is nice to see an "old veteran" returning! Welcome!
(I am just an active player)
xmo5 can probably tell you better what is going on but here is a start:
1.) The awbw site is still working and there is a small active player base. Enough to get games any time
2.) There are some map makers and some map committee members active
3.) The site is administrated well enough to fix the rarely occurring access problems (fatal web site errors) in a timely manner.
4.) The old forum is available read-only and this one allows people to communicate now. (Probably only few players are aware of this forum though as it is not linked from the main awbw site.)
So it is quite possible to have some fun here

Re: Hello Everyone
Well look at that! He lives!
It looks like you got the run down already, so I'll leave out most of the details, but apart from me, the AWBW map committee consists of:
Mori (head of MC), Everdan, Bamboozle, Morgan Leah, and Walker
I'm probably the most active followed by Bamboozle and Everdan, so we're probably the best bets if you're trying to corner one of us.
Anyway, we're definitely a lot smaller community than you're used to. We'd been in a steady decline for a while and then had some major bugs, site outages, and eventual server migration that scared a lot of people off. There're still some lingering issues, but Glen and amarriner are both aware of them. Haven't heard from amarriner in a while and Glen hasn't has his site permissions reinstated since the server migration, so we're a bit limited at the moment. Most of the glitches aren't too bad, but the big ones are the broken boot timer and automatic game generator for the league... so don't expect those to work
I'll leave it at that for now. I haven't played a game in quite a while (I have an "active" game that's gone nowhere for months), but if you're looking for someone to beat, I'll humbly offer myself as sacrifice Just send me a message here or on the site if you're interested... or for pretty much anything, really.
Welcome back!

Re: Hello Everyone
Hi everyone,
I just recently joined the forum and am fairly new to the AWBW community (or what's left of it) as a whole. So, I figured this is the place to introduce yourself and say hello.
There's not much else to say besides my enthusiasm for AW.

Welcome James!
This community is quite small but friendly. Many players don't know the forum or just play. But it is nice if people like you come and say hello. If you have any questions please ask.

Re: Hello Everyone
I appreciate you making me feel welcome.
One question I have is about certain exploits used in maps designed for the league. For example, I created a game recently on a league map that lets each player start with a pre-owned lander and black boat. These pre-owned units are initially placed on land tiles like mountains and each player's HQ.
Why is that the case? Is there a certain reason why it's designed that way instead of just placing the boats on shoals?

Re: Hello Everyone
Can you tell specifically which map you mean? Perhaps post the link to it.
One possible reason to put a unit on a normally inaccessible tile can be to force the player to take a decision.
A get advantage A (by going in one specific direction)
B get advantage B (by going in a different direction)
But you cannot go back and get the other option.
Another possible reason is to create delays / destructible obstacles for a player.
So there are cases where such strangely placed units can make an interesting game

This is the map I'm talking about.
It probably doesn't affect all the much in the grand scheme of things, but I'd be interested to see if it's done for the reason you mentioned in your previous post about forcing the player to make a decision.

Re: Hello Everyone
in the example which you mention, there is a lander on the HQ and a blackboat on a mountain.
Normally the lander on the mountain can make an exposed HQ safe. In the given map I do not see that. The HQ is safe since it is close to 2 home bases. So I think it is an easy decision to use the lander as a transport as the protection for the HQ is not needed.
Similarily the blackboat on the mountain is very close to a home base. It is not blocking the opponent unless the game is already lost/won. So the blackboat could also start in the harbour without making much difference.
So IMO this is a great map. But the special placement of these ships does not seem very important here.
But for example on this map it is a different story: http://awbw.amarriner.com/prevmaps.php?maps_id=53960
You can see an infantry placed on a pipe (where it normally could not go). Here it is all about making a decision.
(by the way - perhaps we should go to a different section if we want to discuss about maps)

Re: Hello Everyone
All right. I appreciate the help.
The map you posted is a much clearer demonstration of why people use those exploits when designing maps.
Sure, if I have more questions then I'll post them in a more suitable thread.
