The Best Number in the Business Empty The Best Number in the Business

This is about to get heavy so buckle up.

Good, now that you're all ready, can we just take a second to talk about how 25 is a great number? I mean, really, what more can you want in a number? Sure, sure, 100 is one of the greatest numbers of all time; it's so clean, it's a perfect square, and it represents the whole picture. 100%. Perfection. But is it really? No. See, people don't look at the whole picture, people look at things in parts so, while 100 is a great representation of the whole, all we're interested in is fractions of that whole. You know what fraction is sexy? 1/4. Yeah, I said it: 1/4. Admire it for a minute and just let it sink in. It's so good that we (Americans) even use it as a unit of currency. Besides, if it's not a fraction you can easily split your KitKat into, what use is it anyway?

Now imagine that we took that beautiful fraction and we combined it with the power of 100. That's right, we're back to 25. It's like taking shrimp and wrapping it in bacon- you took two great things and made them even better. Milk and cookies, bread and butter, peanut butter and jelly. It's not rocket science, we're just making numbers better. Did I mention that, not only does 25 make a beautiful 1/4 of a beautiful 100, but it retains the important characteristic of being a perfect square? And, not only is it still a perfect square, but since we used the magical 1/4 fraction, its square root is 1/2 of 100's square root. Now don't get me wrong, 1/2 is no 1/4, but it's still a nice fraction nonetheless (remember the KitKat rule) and nobody will complain having that as a bonus. Its square root, 5, is a good number too, just as 10 is with 100. Why do you think we rate things 5 stars when we really like them? Why do you think we have 5 fingers on our hands? Exactly.

Okay, okay, math trickery aside, 25 is great for all kinds of things. It makes transactions easy in either cent or dollar form, it's a great age to be, and in most cars I've been in, its a great volume level for music you want to listen to loudly without blowing your eardrums out. Who doesn't want that? And the list doesn't stop there! It works as a speed limit, it works as a percent (as discussed), it works as a date, it works as a temperature, it works as a high school class size, and it works as an important anniversary. It does practically anything you want.

Finally, and most importantly, it just looks good; the visual appeal is absolutely undeniable. With the perfect blend of curves and angles mixed with a well orchestrated degree of pseudo-symmetry it has a natural beauty rivaled by few. And it does it all in 2 digits.

25

Wow. Lets look at that one more time.

25

That's right folks, no hidden strings or mirror tricks here. Just two perfect digits. Not to knock suffixes and units or anything. It looks fantastic as 25th or even as 25%, 25 psi, 25 kg, 25 oC, 25 million miles, or with just about any other unit or suffix you can throw at it. It just plain works.

So in review:

  • It's derived from a combination of other fantastic numbers
  • It's a perfect square and even its square root is great
  • It can be used for so many useful things
  • It's one of the hottest looking numbers on the market
  • It's completely open to accessorizing without sacrificing its own natural beauty

Of 100, it makes up a quarter
Calling it 1/4 is easier and shorter
It gets you through mathematical equations with ease
as percentages and currency conversion become a breeze

Of all of the numbers that have been contrived
The best of them could only be twenty-five
And if somehow there's anyone who could doubt that
Just verify with whoever invented the Kit Kat

It might not be a good speed to drive
Nor a very safe distance to dive
Yet I don't know how I would survive
If I didn't have the number twenty-five

I wanted to use font color #252525, it seemed so perfect, except that that's nearly the same color as the background and didn't show up well.
For some reason I didn't feel like saying that at the time, I just used #525252 to see if anyone would notice, but for some reason I felt the need to come back and give the reason.
See, this is nearly impossible to read.

Ah, that makes sense. I always wondered why you used a different color. Another mystery explained!
